Every year, our charity has the distinct honor of recognizing a family that embodies strength, resilience, and hope. We are thrilled to announce the Bermudez family as the Ronald McDonald House Northeast Kansas Family of the Year for 2026!
An Unexpected Journey
The Bermudez family’s journey took a sudden and frightening turn. Alexa experienced a medical emergency at just 21 weeks. Despite being placed on strict bed rest in hopes of delaying delivery, Alexa went into early labor. Little Benzaleel required immediate, specialized medical attention, so doctors admitted him to Stormont Vail Health to receive critical care.
A Home Away from Home
When a child is hospitalized, families face immense stress. They shouldn’t also have to worry about lodging or meals. While Benzaleel recovered in the hospital, Alexa, her husband Jacob, and their daughter Athaliha needed to stay close by his side.
During this challenging time, the family moved into the Ronald McDonald House Northeast Kansas. The House provided the Bermudez family with a comforting, supportive environment just steps away from Stormont Vail Health. This allowed the family to remain united and find essential rest. They could focus all their energy on Benzaleel.
Keeping Families Close
At Ronald McDonald House, we care for families with sick or injured children. Our essential services remove barriers and promote healing. We deeply believe that when a child is sick, the entire family needs comfort and support to remain strong. We offer a safe haven to families like the Bermudez family. This helps them focus entirely on their child’s recovery.
